The Artificial Womb Is Born And The World of the Matrix Begins

”One by one the eggs were transferred from their test-tubes to the larger containers; deftly the peritoneal lining was slit, the morula dropped into place, the saline solution poured . . . and already the bottle had passed on through an opening in the wall, slowly on into the Social Predestination Room.” Aldous Huxley, ”Brave New World”

The artificial womb exists. In Tokyo, researchers have developed a technique called EUFI — extrauterine fetal incubation. They have taken goat fetuses, threaded catheters through the large vessels in the umbilical cord and supplied the fetuses with oxygenated blood while suspending them in incubators that contain artificial amniotic fluid heated to body temperature.

Yoshinori Kuwabara, chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Juntendo University in Tokyo, has been working on artificial placentas for a decade. His interest grew out of his clinical experience with premature infants, and as he writes in a recent abstract, ”It goes without saying that the ideal situation for the immature fetus is growth within the normal environment of the maternal organism.”

Kuwabara and his associates have kept the goat fetuses in this environment for as long as three weeks. But the doctor’s team ran into problems with circulatory failure, along with many other technical difficulties. Pressed to speculate on the future, Kuwabara cautiously predicts that ”it should be possible to extend the length” and, ultimately, ”this can be applied to human beings.”

For a moment, as you contemplate those fetal goats, it may seem a short hop to the Central Hatchery of Aldous Huxley’s imagination. In fact, in recent decades, as medicine has focused on the beginning and end stages of pregnancy, the essential time inside the woman’s body has been reduced. We are, however, still a long way from connecting those two points, from creating a completely artificial gestation. But we are at a moment when the fetus, during its obligatory time in the womb, is no longer inaccessible, no longer locked away from medical interventions.

The future of human reproductive medicine lies along the speeding trajectories of several different technologies. There is neonatology, accomplishing its miracles at the too-abrupt end of gestation. There is fetal surgery, intervening dramatically during pregnancy to avert the anomalies that kill and cripple newborns. There is the technology of assisted reproduction, the in-vitro fertilization and gamete retrieval-and-transfer fireworks of the last 20 years. And then, inevitably, there is genetics. All these technologies are essentially new, and with them come ethical questions so potent that the very inventors of these miracles seem half-afraid of where we may be heading.

    1. hate to tell you this but that will never happen. it is a maternal need and want for most women from a very young age - to become pregnant and help nurture their own child. this is an amazing step in the gynaecology world and it isnt a negative thing. it could potentially save many lives.

      Delete
    2. if saving lives is what it's all about, why not start where you can do the most good?

We could save many millions of more lives if we simply stopped aborting so many babies for the sake of vanity and convenience, in the name of women's rights and choice.

    3. Abortion happens for myriad reasons and that's just too general, rose-colored-glasses an approach to take. Agree with you, I'd love to see a world where babies weren't aborted. The issue here is being able to conceive with you partner even when medically being unable. I have three amazing children myself, but have many friends unable to conceive for various reasons. A cousin tried for years where her body kept spontaneously aborting after two months. This could be creepy but could also be magnificent.

    4. I know this is going to sound harsh but maybe it would change some minds. I hope any woman who is against abortion is either raped or is made to decide between her own life and the babies and THEN come back and tell me abortion should be illegal. And men? well we men really have n right to make something illegal that has nothing to do with us. regardless of which way this goes this shoul;d be 100% decided by women.

    5. I take it you're a man - Mr Anonymous. Guess what, as a woman with 3 kids, I'd choose mine over an unborn baby. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

    6. abortion should be any womens right.we should be able to choose what we do with our bodies and you Christian freaks stay the fuck out of it.

    7. except unborn babies, they have no fucking rights, after all. their bodies are dependent, so they have no rights to them. it appears Christians don't have exclusive domain of ignorance and hypocrisy.

    8. To the first person that replied... I hate to tell you, but that social model, that women feel they must have children to fullfill some internal physiological and emotional need has been changing over the past several decades. women pursue careers and personal goals, having children later in life, fewer children or none at all. times are changing, women want true equality with men and that cannot happen until society as a whole stops forcing the idea that a woman is not complete and should not feel whole and satisfied with life till she has squeezed a few babies out.

      Delete
    9. There can never be 100% equality.

      Delete
    10. Why can't there ever be 100% equality????? Is it because some pig-headed men don't feel that woman are and can be equal in their work/goals in our sociality???? True that some of the middle eastern countries mistreat their woman and in fact treat them like cattle... But woman are being enlightened and moving away from that too. I believe and any person... who sets goals should be given the right to attain them.

      Delete
    11. I believe there shouldn't be 100% equality, and before you jump your guns on me let me explain. For the most part yes equality is the best but it would take privilege that only women have. The "women and children first" gone, the "in times of ear women can CHOOSE to go" gone, "ladies first" gone, "men pay when going out (no in all cases but counts)" gone, and so on item for item gone. Yes there are places where women have little to none rights, but I believe in some cases there is not need for equality...

    12. Rate, just before i get ranting i want to put this out there. Unborn children do not ask to be here!
This, just like any modern medicine advance is amazing if used for the right purpose. Think of the amazing possibilities for people who can't carry naturally!
And as far as you are concerned with the whole abortion business... Would you euthanise a newborn baby just because it wasn't wanted? No. So what's the difference? Except that one baby has oxygen in their lungs and one doesn't. And as for the whole "Gods creation/gods wish/hand of god" crap, its got naff all to do with religion. Its called being an emotive, empathic human with basic human morals and natural human needs.
We don't know why we are here on this earth, and we don't need to know. But we do know that we can bring life into the world, and that's the most amazing gift.

      Delete
    13. You realise of course that if it ever became possible to artificially gestate a baby for the whole term that /would/ be a practical technology to end abortion. The embryo could simply be removed and placed into cybernetic foster care, assuming of course the pro-life lobby was willing to put its money where its mouth was and pay for it.

    14. 8-) Big Bad Boss says it's time for Baaaby Wars. No room at the inn, no need of the womb. Technologies of fallen ones taught in the religion of science to the incredible 'gifted' technocrats that don't give a rat's a.. about life, but only the pursuit of the 'magical' glove of the magician, uhhh, that would be the left hand glove. Wake up dreamers before the sleepers wake up.

    15. Why should women desire not to have children? It is policies that dictate and mold opinions of the ignorant and the masses. Euthanasia, abortions, and the ill applied idea of equality, as a programming mechanism, that are the tools of discernment for every conscious person that love life, for to hate God is to love death.

      Delete
    16. How do you know that unborn children, already conceived do not want to be born? That is a presumption that life does not want or need to survive. How do you think you are living and having an experience? Is the goat matrix a better 'mother' than a natural mother? Would you like to spawn with a goat mother, or have some other artificial method to bring forth from something unnatural, say like your first child? Would you then think that a goat father is acceptable to bring your wife to conceive? Do you not see where this is going? Really?

I'm unable to carry a baby thanks to cancer. If I did fall pregnant I would be at high risk of reccurrance which would lead to death due to all the estrogen being pumped into my body. Not to mention the baby would be completely deformed from all the medications.

  18. God created a universe with near infinite diversity where anything that is possible can happen. Such gross arrogance to say 'man playing God' we are a product of creation and everything we do is also a product of creation . God created science to save us from tyranny of blind faith. He gave us eyes to see, a mind to think and question. He also gave us problems to solve which in doing so would raise us and alow us to transform and find true divinity. This will never happen if we stick to old ideals. Science isnt the problem, allowing people to be greedy and selfish is what causes the problems in the world.

    1. Why should women have all the fun?! This technology could allow any individual to have kids, regardless of their birth sex or indeed lack of. the sooner the false paradime of male and female is brought down and replaced with the truth of a continum of sexuality the better. Let all people be equal.

      Delete
    2. The only false paradigm is in your thinking, but you are not alone. Male and Female are two distinct personages, actually created. The rest that follows is a matter of choice. Every thing brings forth from itself the same, but those that play gods to nature bring forth bitter fruit. By their fruit they will be judged. What's next?

  19. as it was in the beginning so it will be in the end. Yahweh is not mocked. this too cool , but in the end God is still God . life is in God hands. death is in the hands of Yahweh as well. we can not play God , for we can not make man from nothing, that is God. God has given us the brain to MAKE things to help us , and it is He who lets it o on . He caused His own Son to be beaten by the very ones He came to show the way to, so buck and let God do the God stuff and you just keep preaching the saving power of the Christ who proved is God head and His love for you...

    1. A child conceived in the matrix of a goat? Are you kidding me that you cannot see what this is? Child of the goat. That is the meme. The spiritual side of this is speaking volumes. With all your getting of information, consider reading the Bible. That is what a true intelligent person would do, to be equipped with knowledge necessary to make decisions about life.

      Delete
    2. What Bible do you suggest we read??Since all faiths claim their version is the "real version"! I spent days trying to educate myself on religion,as I do believe in god,but was unsure about which faith to follow..At the end of my research,I have come to the conclusion that no faith can actually prove that their version is the facts!! Therefore,NO MAN can preach religion,as you are simply following what you FEEL is the truth. Not putting any religion down,as I feel faith in general is an amazing thing, but my question is,what is the first religion known to man??I have heard Pagan,Buddhist, catholic, and that it all started in Egypt?? Does anyone other than the Government have the answer to this question??

  23. I don't see where the human soul implications are here. It's not cloning, it's just removing the need for a human being to be a host for the baby. There's still an egg and a sperm here people.

  24. There goes women's monopoly on human reproduction, and the main weapon of feminist harlots, who view men as mere walking ATMs. With women now unneeded to procreate, no man will need to sacrifice his freedom and future to have children.

  26. I would do this in a heartbeat. Speaking as a woman who doesn't have falopian tubes and can not get pregnant on my own, I would love to be able to watch my baby grow right in front of my eyes. This is incredible and I hope this research continues.
